Cryptocurrency Confusion: Dormant Satoshi Nakamoto-Linked Account Sparks Speculation

by Ouess

An inactive X account, believed to be linked to the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, recently garnered attention after listing various cryptocurrencies on Sunday, raising suspicions of a potential ownership mix-up.

The X account, previously known on Twitter as @Satoshi, was established in May 2018. After remaining dormant for five years from October 2018 to October 2023, it unexpectedly posted a “Hello world” message last week, drawing attention from X’s community note system.

On Sunday, the account posted again, sharing multiple wallet addresses along with hashtags for cryptocurrencies $XRISE and $SATS. Many users speculated that the account had been hacked, while some suggested the posts could be indicative of a rug pull. Interestingly, one user chose to invest in one of the cryptocurrencies mentioned by the alleged Satoshi account, stating, “I do not care: I bought.” However, they later admitted to exiting with a 70% loss, appreciating the tip-off.

As of now, the current owner of the account remains unknown. According to Andy Rowe, a supporter of Craig Wright, the account was shared jointly by himself and Wright during its inactive years. However, Rowe claims that hackers gained access to the account on New Year’s Day. He alleges that the account was then repeatedly sold to different buyers in a potential scam, where the seller would contact X’s support to regain control of the account while retaining the profits.

The recent posts promoting $SATS and $XRISE have since been deleted, adding a layer of mystery to the situation.
