Bitcoin’s Rare Market Signal: Echoes of 2017 Bull Run?

Bitcoin seems to be on the brink of a rare market move that hasn’t occurred in the past eight years—a pattern reminiscent of the precursor to the 2017 bull run when Bitcoin surged to $20,000.

Highlighted by the well-known commentator Moustache in a recent X (previously Twitter) post on January 9, Bitcoin is nearing a significant moving average crossover—a critical indicator for the asset’s price action.

The crypto market is abuzz with anticipation surrounding the first potential spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the U.S., propelling Bitcoin near $50,000. Despite this, hitting new all-time highs remains a distant prospect.

However, beneath the surface, there’s considerable significance in the current BTC/USD movements. Moustache points out an intriguing development on the three-week timeframe—where the 21-period exponential moving average (EMA) is on the verge of crossing the 50-period simple moving average (SMA).

This crossover, a rare occurrence last observed in 2016, typically indicates robust short-term performance. Historically, such crossovers have led to significant Bitcoin gains, eventually culminating in the asset’s previous all-time high of $20,000 in December 2017.

Moreover, Moustache highlighted the presence of a ‘buy signal’ in the super indicator, emphasizing the importance of these rare signals in market movements.

While many traders are optimistic about Bitcoin’s short-term and long-term potential, skeptics caution that the enthusiasm surrounding the ETF approval might wane post-announcement. Notably, trader Il Capo of Crypto, known for his predictions, anticipates a potential BTC retracement to around $12,000 following an initial market pump in response to the ETF decision.

He suggested an interesting week ahead, expecting BTC to reach $48,000 to $50,000 and ETH to $2500 to $2600 initially before a market top. His analysis hints at the possibility of short-term positions aiming for new lows, with the first retracement estimated around $30,000 according to a chart he shared.
