Anthropic IPO plans to sell up to $3.5 billion in shares to Japanese investors. The company announced this through its upcoming U.S. listing.
Why the Anthropic IPO matters for Japan
A Japanese regulatory filing disclosed the proposed sale on November 2. The amount equals 552.9 billion yen. Therefore, Japanese investors can participate directly.
Bloomberg reported that Mizuho Securities will manage the Japanese portion. Goldman Sachs and Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities will help process orders. Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities will also participate. Meanwhile, Mizuho Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group join underwriting.
The filing lists working capital and operating expenses as fund uses. Capital investments are also included. However, Anthropic has not disclosed the IPO’s final size or share price. It also has not revealed a valuation.
Earlier, Anthropic filed its IPO registration with U.S. regulators on October 26. The company plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT.
Anthropic IPO expands access beyond Japan
In addition to Japan, investors in Australia and Canada can participate. Selected European countries will also have access. The international distribution supports a potential November listing.
Some investors discussed a $1.5 trillion valuation, according to Reuters. However, the November 2 filing does not lock in those expectations. It also does not set final offering terms.
The Japanese IPO market has been stagnant. New listings hit a 14-year low. During SpaceX’s June IPO, Japanese investors received about $2.2 billion in shares. That was part of SpaceX’s $75 billion global sale.
Rising AI financing costs add pressure
Anthropic is raising funds for computing resources. It also needs capital to build its Claude AI models. The IPO follows a $63 billion chip finance deal called Project North Star.
Blackstone warned about Anthropic’s potential credit rating. The firm expects a double-B rating. That is below investment-grade debt.
Meanwhile, Meta plans to raise up to $95 billion in equity. Alphabet is considering up to $85 billion in share sales. Technology companies are financing AI investments.
Anthropic’s Japanese filing does not specify when investors can begin buying shares.
Key takeaway
The Anthropic IPO opens a $3.5 billion share sale to Japanese investors. Mizuho manages the Japanese portion. However, final terms and valuation remain undisclosed. Therefore, investors should watch for updated filings.
