Why Bitcoin ETF outflows matter

The reversal followed $128 million in combined inflows on Wednesday. That day, Bitcoin briefly climbed above $80,000. The move came after Democratic victories in the US midterm elections.

However, Bitcoin fell back below $76,000 on Thursday. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.5%. According to Reuters, that was its biggest single-day decline since April 2025.

Fidelity leads Bitcoin ETF outflows

Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund led Thursday’s withdrawals. It saw roughly $200 million in outflows. That followed about $237 million in inflows on Wednesday. Farside Investors data confirms this.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust recorded another $105 million in net outflows. Consequently, IBIT’s outflow streak extended to five straight sessions. More than $1 billion has left the fund since October 30.

Following Thursday’s close, Bitcoin ETFs’ year-to-date net outflows stood at about $510 million.

Analysts weigh outlook after market sell-off

Crypto analyst Michaël van de Poppe commented on X Thursday. He said Bitcoin could find a near-term bottom on Friday. That could happen after dipping below $75,000. He pointed to the severity of the Nasdaq’s decline.

“I expect Nasdaq to bottom tomorrow,” he wrote. “The same for Bitcoin, potentially after sweeping $75,000.”

Dean Lyulkin is CEO of Cardiff and founder of The Dean’s List. He said the current environment differs from the period before the 2008 crisis.

“The global financial crisis wasn’t caused by Democrats taking Congress,” Lyulkin said. He noted that the Fed had already raised rates substantially. The housing market was also weakening before that crisis.

Lyulkin acknowledged vulnerabilities in commercial real estate and private credit. He also cited potentially excessive AI spending. Nevertheless, he argued that household balance sheets and the banking system are considerably stronger today.

Key takeaway

Bitcoin ETF outflows hit $530 million on Thursday. Bitcoin fell below $76,000 as stocks tumbled. Therefore, traders should watch Friday’s price action and ETF flow data closely.
