FINMA approves Bitcoin ETF for retail investors. Switzerland’s financial regulator announced the approval on October 20. Therefore, retail investors can gain direct Bitcoin exposure through a regulated fund.

Why the FINMA Bitcoin ETF approval matters

FINMA cited growing investor interest in Bitcoin. The regulator classified the product as an alternative investment fund. Consequently, the fund can invest directly in Bitcoin. It does not need to comply with normal diversification limits.

The exemption is based on Bitcoin’s trading history and volume. Meanwhile, other fund managers have submitted applications. Some have also announced plans for similar ETFs.

Switzerland previously approved a crypto fund for qualified investors in September 2021. However, this latest authorization covers an ETF for retail investors.

The regulator has not yet determined the issuer. It also has not set the trading symbol or launch date.

Interest in regulated Bitcoin products remains strong globally. For example, BlackRock recently filed for another Bitcoin ETF in the U.S.

Swiss regulator sets strict Bitcoin custody requirements

FINMA granted a diversification exemption. Nevertheless, supervised institutions must address custody and operational risks. On January 12, 2026, the regulator provided guidance on crypto safeguards.

Fund providers must explain investment risks clearly. Distributors must also follow Switzerland’s Financial Services Act. Therefore, firms must assess whether investments suit customers. They must explain potential losses and Bitcoin’s sharp price swings.

FINMA warned that approval cannot protect investors from losses. Specifically, investors could lose a substantial portion of their capital if Bitcoin falls.

Swiss Bitcoin ETF approval follows existing crypto products

Switzerland already offers crypto exchange-traded products on the SIX Swiss Exchange. However, many existing products operate as debt securities. They sit outside the collective investment fund framework.

For instance, 21Shares launched its first Dogecoin ETP in April 2025. The company planned to list it on Switzerland’s SIX exchange.

The recent FINMA approval follows a separate procedure for investment funds. The regulator confirmed that other providers have applied. They are also planning to apply.

What comes next

FINMA has not named the issuer or launch date. Therefore, investors await more details. Meanwhile, other providers may receive approval soon. The approval marks a major step for Swiss crypto regulation.
