During a recent town hall event in South Carolina, former U.S. President and leading Republican contender, Donald Trump, weighed in on the topic of Bitcoin, suggesting that the cryptocurrency has evolved significantly and may require some level of regulation.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump acknowledged that Bitcoin has “taken a life of its own,” in response to a query from anchor Laura Ingraham about whether the U.S. should embrace the digital currency. He noted a growing trend of people showing interest in using Bitcoin for transactions, indicating a shift in public acceptance. However, he also emphasized the need for regulatory oversight, stating, “You probably have to do some regulation. But many people are embracing it. More and more I’m seeing people wanting to pay bitcoin. … I can live with it one way or the other.”
This stance appears to mark a softening of Trump’s previous position. In 2019, during his presidency, Trump expressed skepticism about cryptocurrencies, tweeting that he was “not a fan” and dismissing them as “not money.” Reiterating his preference for the U.S. dollar, he reaffirmed his longstanding affinity for traditional currency.
Furthermore, Trump has voiced concerns about central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), labeling them as risky and pledging to oppose their implementation if elected.
